On Sunday, September 26 we will host an experienced parent able to lead a discussion on ways to address mental illness.

There are ways to understand and help family or friends who have a mental illness. Our discussion leader is a “Family-to-Family” Program Educator with NAMI. She has a son who has had tremendous ups and downs that can now encourage others to ‘hang in there’.

This is a ‘brown bag’ event meeting at noon in our downstairs, multi-use room. It will be a confidential group so as to promote personal honesty and a new depth of sharing for all who attend.

For those already planning to join us, here is all you need to know to be a part of this.  Open to all to rent a space; $25 cost.  All profits benefit our member working to help Jamaican youth.  

Contact us ASAP to reserve a spot as space is limited.  Anyone with a question can contact us too. 

The spaces are two parking spots.  You may set-up the Friday before from 4 to 10 PM and/or Saturday morning from 7 to 9 AM.  Official selling starts at 9 AM and you must stay until 2 PM if you have rented a spot.  You may NOT sell or give away:  animals, guns, x-rated videos, food or drinks of any kind.

We will provide food items at reasonable costs as part of our fundraising for the day.  A raffle will be held with $1.00 tickets to win groceries at Summit Store (Thank you Darrell and Karen Osborn!)

All items left here Friday night will be watched by someone spending the night in the parking lot.  Come meet your neighbors.

Rock on the Mount ended at around 7:30 p.m., May 15, 2010, but the drive to raise funds for a well in West Africa has not ended. Our Christian music festival is set for May 15, at the Loma Prieta playfield. Johannes will headline (visit their site). This year we are adding a few youth bands, including Jared Wilson’s from his high school. I’m also working on putting together a youth band of my own — I’m really young at heart — to perform original music.

This marks the fourth Rock on the Mount event, a festival started by Roth Rind to benefit Camp Victory and missions. This year, I am organizing Rock on the Mount, and proceeds will benefit the well project we’ve been working on for the last year. The missions committee at Mountain Bible Church is aiming to raise $15,000.

We need your help. First, we need someone to coordinate the vendors, whom we will charge $25 per spot. Whoever takes up this task will be responsible for signing up, vetting and organizing our vendors. Second, we need people to help on the day of the event with set up and organization. Generally the park needs a little cleaning before the festival begins. Also we need help setting up the stage and other areas of the event field. What will the day look like? Well, there will be a lot of young people. A group from Lakeside Community Church in Hanford is expected (we connected with them through Camp Victory). Also, as the event will be held in May, we will be advertising to the Christian high schools and middle schools, as well as the colleges. The bands will play down in the amphitheater, games and food will be available on the field. Vendors will line the gazebo. The first acts will be the high school groups, playing short sets. Then, hopefully, a couple of college bands and (possibly) a comedian. Finally, our three headlining acts.

Johannes is a touring band, and they will be providing the sound system and technical support.

The headlining act at last year’s Rock on the Mount has a new double-album, and it rocks. The Idols Among Us is Johannes’ latest release, containing a few of my favorites: “Redemption,” “Beautiful,” and “Sins Death.” It’s available everywhere, including iTunes and Amazon, and is worth putting in your collection.

Johannes will appear again at Rock on the Mount, May 15, an event sponsored by Mountain Bible Church. The band has gained some success touring California and playing at Bible camps. This latest release showcases the band’s finer moments. They’ve also had some success with “the donkey song,” which is quite popular at camps. It’s playful, not indicative of the band’s edgier side, but quite original.

Nate and Kristen are posting notes from their mission trip to Africa at http://kristen2africa.blogspot.com. Nate lately wrote:

It’s our first full day at Makani after our 10-day backpacking/mountaineering trip and it feels great to be back! The trip began gradually with a stay-over at a cabin the first night and a nice cave overhang the next, yet my ideas of what a camping trip might entail was challenged greatly over the next eight days that followed.

We have a direct link to Haiti through Hollister Christian Fellowship that has been working there for years. We are raising funds to send help through them.

We have established a special fund to be used for relief by way of these established channels built on years of commitment to the poor in Haiti. We were part of a special event last year that directly highlighted Haiti as this news release says:

“Last year at the Global Day of Prayer, HCF brought the young Pastor Josue from Port-au-Prince to Santa Cruz to share with us the needs of his countrymen. At this point it is NOT KNOWN WHETHER PASTOR JOSUE IS DEAD OR ALIVE. HCF has not been able to make contact with him or anyone on the ground there.”

Update on January 18 – Our church collected $1,055 to send to HCF. Pastor Josue is alive and checking in on families and orphans. He is meeting a US medical team at the Dominican Republic border to guide them in to set-up a Field Medical Unit at his family’s house.
